On November 20 and 21, 2014, SFH attorneys Bradley Haywood, Joseph Flood and Jonathan Sheldon presented at the 22nd Annual Virginia Bar Association Capital Defense Workshop. The event, held in the Richmond Marriott in Richmond, VA, is the premier capital defense training in Virginia, and is attended annually by hundreds of Virginia attorneys. Mr. Haywood’s lecture, “Litigating Snitches: From Reliability Hearings to Jury Instructions”, took place on the first day of the conference, and included comprehensive discussion of how to challenge the testimony of snitches: informants, cooperating co-defendants, accomplices or anyone else who testifies for government-provided benefit. Mr. Flood assisted nationally-recognized expert Rick Nevin in presenting “Lead Poisoning, Diminished Capacity and the Death Penalty,” which examined the wide-ranging effects of lead poisoning on criminal behavior nationwide. Sheldon spoke on the topic of “Recognizing Mental Health Symptoms and Working with Difficult Clients”.
